What job is a backflow preventer actually doing, and why does it get tested every year?
Its job is holding water to one direction, never letting it run backward into the clean supply. That matters most where irrigation connects in, since fertilizer and standing water sit on the other side of that valve from what comes out of your tap.
The internal check valves and seals wear over time, the way any mechanical part does, and a preventer that has quietly failed gives no obvious sign from the surface, which is why testing, not a visual look, is the standard.
A test involves gauges connected directly to the assembly, measuring whether each check valve holds the pressure differential it is rated for, and the result is a real pass or fail, not a guess based on how the device looks.
A pass on last year’s test does not guarantee a pass this year, which is why the requirement is annual, not a one-time check, and why the result is reported on paper rather than assumed from the assembly’s appearance.
